Specialty Doctor in Acute Medicine 81 views

This is an exciting time to join the Acute Medicine team, which is based in the Combined Assessment Unit (CAU) in our new state of the art District General Hospital.

Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary is the principal hospital in South-West Scotland, providing services to Dumfries and the surrounding catchment area with a population of approximately 148,000 people.

Successful applicants will be working as part of an enthusiastic consultant-led team, comprising doctors in training, advanced nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and a full range of Allied Health Professionals. The CAU is located adjacent to the Emergency Department (ED) within the Emergency Care Centre (ECC) and accepts patients from ED as well as direct admissions from Primary Care.

The Acute Medicine Specialty Doctor will contribute to the assessment and management of unselected medical admissions, including Ambulatory patients, and to the continuing care of short-stay patients within the CAU following consultant review. He/she will be supported to develop procedural skills within the unit, and eventually to support and teach the junior trainees in the acquisition of such skills. Audit and quality improvement work will be encouraged, and there is a culture of ongoing education and learning in a friendly and supportive environment. There is a consultant presence in the unit throughout an extended working day, meaning that senior advice and supervision are always readily available. There is also an opportunity to manage High Dependency care patients within our superb Critical Care Unit, with support from the Intensive Care team when required.

Hours of work will be 40 hours, 10 PAs per week (full time) or an agreed variation of this subject to a minimum of 16 hours per week. Four hours per week are allocated to Supporting Professional Activity time (SPA). The post will include a contribution to the out of hours rota, with some evening and weekend work paid at enhanced rates to support the middle grade doctors. It is anticipated that this will evolve into a leadership/co-ordination role as the Specialty Doctor gains in experience.

Placement on the salary scale will be based on previous equivalent experience. Annual leave entitlement is 6 weeks per year (depending on experience) plus 10 public holidays per annum (pro rata for part time staff).

Successful applicants will be supported to develop the full range of Acute Medicine competencies and any candidates wishing to pursue the CESR process to full accreditation will be supported to do so.
